Ne-Yo Interview in Detroit

Октябрь 9, 2009

It’s smooth o’clock, and Ne-Yo is comfortable, conversational and
spunky as he and the rest of his crew — his management, his dancers,
his chief of security — are traveling towards the next tour stop. Last
night, Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. Tonight, Baltimore’s Lyric
Opera House. At 29, Ne-Yo (born Shaffer Chimere Smith) still speaks and
sounds like an excited teenager who could tell you more about the
trials, tribulations and sailing the high seas of hormones and puberty
than sold-out tours, astronomical celebrity status or his role as an
international R&B superstar with nearly a trio of decades under his
leather belt — a belt that perfectly matches the upholstery of his tour
bus.

“I’m not the dude who needs all the luxuries,” says Ne-Yo, his upbeat
demeanor infectious even via phone. “We’ve got the leather seats, but I
don’t know anything about chandeliers. See, I’m not going to spend a
whole bunch of money on something that don’t make no sense. What do you
need a chandelier on a tour bus for? What would be the reason? That
doesn’t make any sense! However, leatherNe-Yo Interview seating looks really, really
nice … so we’ll spend the money on that.”

While Ne-Yo may keep things simplistic instead of plush and lush while
on tour, the man does know how to treat himself when the tickets are
sold, the lights fade and the curtains close. “I’ve become an old
school car fanatic,” he admits, a ’79 Corvette his chief of security
built for him from scratch as a birthday gift occupying the driveway of
one of his many residences; possibly his recently purchased penthouse
in downtown Atlanta. “I’ve got the whole 26th floor, so it’s all very
sensible. I’m not going to go buy diamonds when I could use that money
on something that benefits me. Not to say that I don’t have a diamond
chain here and there, but those were bought with leftover money. It’s
not, ‘Oh, I got some money. Let me run straight to the jeweler.’”

After his parents split, Ne-Yo moved with his sister and mother to Las
Vegas, where his mother worked four jobs to put food on the table,
making sure “her children never needed anything” to the best of her
ability, recalls Ne-Yo. “We weren’t poverty-stricken, but I definitely
did not come from money. My mom raised us to not even worry about wants
because wants are trivial. What happens? You get something that you
want so bad and a week later, you don’t want it no more. It’s old to
you now. It depreciates the second you touch it. However, things that
you need never get old — food never gets old, shelter never gets old.
Honestly, what I came to find is that if you focus on the things you
need, the things you want … start to fall into place.”

Judging by the sincerity dripping from his voice, it’s hard not to
believe the man. His mother had instilled a mentality of a man into a
boy’s mind — a mentality that stuck, still sticks and resonates loudly
with Ne-Yo’s perception of the entertainment industry.

“I was never the guy that cared for diamonds,” reiterates Ne-Yo, his
choice of words swapped out, but the message of fostering humbleness in
the light of fame, wealth and celebrity remaining. “L.A. Reid” — as
acting Chairman of Island Def Jam Records, declared “the most powerful
black man in the music business” by Ebony Magazine — “had to twist my
arm and make me go buy a diamond chain. Because I’m in the business, I
have to look the part. I had to have something that regular people
can’t have. You have to be something that they can’t be, and that chain
with the diamonds is just one small way of letting it be known. People
don’t expect me to drive down the street in anything but the latest …
but I personally don’t care about that, you know? It’s bullshit,
really.”

When asked about the pressures of large sums of money being dumped on
a young man, Ne-Yo replaces “you” with “I.” While such a blatant
disassociation may escape some, it’s clear that his tales of close
friendships turned corrupt and relationships gone awry is closer to
home than one may initially gather … until his façade briefly falters.
“All of a sudden, you’ve got brand new cousins and uncles you’ve never
met before, but back in the day, they were ‘your favorite!’” exclaims
Ne-Yo, a calm conviction rising from within his throat. “Friends that
are not in as good of a position as you all of a sudden start feeling
like they are entitled because they’ve been your friends for so long.
They’ll try and say that you’ve changed. You know what? I have changed.
I’ve grown up, you know? It’s kind of something that needs to happen in
order to get to the next level of manhood. [But] it really hurts to
have to turn away from people that you spent years with because that’s
something no one can ever prepare you for.”

But isn’t this all about the music? Are we forgetting that the plights
of the music industry are weeds in pure black soil, surrounding the
blossoming, dew-soaked, beautiful nature of successfully pursuing your
dreams but never fully choking the roots of simply wanting to share
your artistic craft with the world? Considering Ne-Yo’s entry into the
entertainment industry — a songwriter who penned tracks for Mary J.
Blige and Faith Evans; his launching pad to a solo career arriving from
another product of his pen, R&B crooner Mario’s number one single,
“Let Me Love You” — it would seem his passion would be naturally
tainted from seeing the inner-workings of a studio rather than the
monetary momentum and the unexpected intangibles that come along with
celebrity and wealth.

“There is something about music that speaks to [my] heart, and speaks
to [my] soul,” says Ne-Yo. “Even after seeing how the music industry
works, I’m still a stickler for a lyric. That magic was never lost for
me. There are some people who can write things and just make you feel
it. It’s just a vibe-oriented process that there is really no way to
lose that magic.”

The Ultimate R&B Album [Box set] [Explicit Lyrics]

Октябрь 6, 2009

Product details

* Audio CD (23 Feb 2004)
* Number of Discs: 2
* Format: Box set, Explicit Lyrics
* Label: Decadance
* Other Editions: Audio CD

This is the best R&B album to hit the shops lately. Including Sean Paul, Joe, R Kelly and many other legends, it also includes some of the lesser known artists. I don’t usually buy this music but gave it a try and was not dissapointed with it. The whole album is fantastic to listen to. I think it would be a great buy for R&B lovers AND people who don’t normally buy this kind of music.

The political process is a wonky beastie

Сентябрь 28, 2009

Given that I normally rent horror, action, scifi, and some other assorted dark stuff…it’s nice to know when I occasionally venture out of my rental bubble I can still find something uplifting.

This film is very amusing but it actually became touching near the end. It’s about this interesting dynamic between a father and daughter where all the maturity is not with the older one. She’s like in grade school, maybe 5th. He’s barely functional and if not for her they might not have what little they have. She’s scary intelligent and tries to make up for his faults as best she can.

It’s a full time job.

On election day he’s drunk and passed out and she sneaks into the voting booth to do it for him but there’s a sudden loss of power and it doesn’t get done. However, he’s listed as having «voted» and it’s decided to be a technical difficulty and the government gets involved in getting him to vote because, by a bizarre coinkadink, he’s the deciding vote. For the first time ever, the candidates for the office are literally tied.

He’s a little confused when this gets presented to him but he quickly works out what happened.

The two presidential candidates are the current President and the Democratic Nominee. They’re neither of them bad guys, although their #2′s (not the VPs) would scare Satan, but this is an impossible situation. They find themselves bending over backward and putting aside their ideals just to secure this one man’s vote…

…while the intelligent daughter sees everything she belives in crumble for the stupid things all these people are doing to secure her father’s vote.

It’s a really great movie and I order you to go see it as soon as possible, if you haven’t already. That’s right, this is a direct ORDER! Check your free will at the door…go get it this minute.

DVD extras are a behind the scenes making of and a few deleted and extended scenes. Of that last bit, you should really watch the 2nd one cut if you’re even a little politically concious…you will laugh your ass off!

Side Note: Had a few issues watching this. Could just be the DVD I had but right after all the trailers and other stuff, once I got to the main menu and started the film the DVD exited itself and turned off. I’ve run into this sort of thing before and relaoded it and got back to the main menu and instead of just clicking the start iten I went to chapter slection and it worked fine…but that was still annoying.

Cherish

Апрель 3, 2009

Cherish is an US-American R&B, pop, and hip hop quartet consisting of the sisters Farrah King (born February 17, 1984), Neosha King (born January 26, 1986), and twins Felisha and Fallon King (born June 5, 1987). The four sisters are originally from Illinois, but moved to Atlanta to further their musical career. The group is signed to Capitol Records and Sho’nuff Records.

Cherish’s first single, entitled “Miss P” was produced by Jermaine Dupri, written by Kandi and featured Da Brat, released by Warner Bros.’ imprint Reprise Records. They can also be found on Da Brat’s single “In Luv Wit Chu” in 2003. They also recorded 3 songs for The Powerpuff Girls: Power Pop soundtrack called “Chemical X”, “Power of a Female” and “Me and My Girls”. They completed a whole album named The Moment that was shelved for undisclosed reasons. After 3 years the group came back with the summer hit “Do It to It” which featured Sean Paul of the YoungBloodZ. The single hit the Billboard Hot 100 at number 12 and entered many other charts including the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs on Billboard and many more. The second single off the album was “Unappreciated”.

Their sophomore album entitled The Truth was released on May 13, 2008. The first single, “Killa” hit the Top 40 on the Pop charts, while the follow-up is “Amnesia”. In a recent interview member, Fallon, described the album as: “The biggest difference to me is the fact that you grow artistically whenever you’re being creative and we’ve been creative for the past couple of years. Our artistry has grown. When we wrote The Truth, we named the album The Truth because basically every song on the album is from personal experiences and we wanted to get personal with our fans. We want everybody to know that they’re not alone going through these things and we’re here.

They are currently working on a comeback album due out to mid 2009.

J.J.Cale – The musical review of album Roll On

Март 28, 2009

# Year: 2009
# Genre: Rock — Classic/Hard

Time to leave a shade

Career of American multi-instrumentalist J.J.Cale, the founder of so-called musical movement Tulsa Soul, has begun more fifty years ago. Its real name – John U.Cale, however, that listeners have not confused the actor with John Kejlom from Velvet Underground, in the mid-sixties it took a pseudonym of J.J.. For many years Cale actively went on tour and acted in various clubs. Its style has developed very much early and since then did not vary – minimalistic arrangements, the thoughtful lyrics and blues with jazz harmonies. He has written down in total more than twenty albums and here many years is little-known, but thus the cult musician. On the big scene it know is better for Eric Clapton’s After Midnight hits and Cocaine. Its songs also it is frequent resong other executors, and melodies invariably became hits. Moreover, such celebrities as already mentioned Eric Clapton, and also Mark Nopfler, Bryan Ferri and Nejl Young recognise strong influence of creativity of Cale on their music. However in the beginning of this century for the musician time has come to leave a shade. So, at the fiftieth ceremony of delivery Grammy the actor has received the award for a joint album with Eric Clapton The Road To Escondido, and interest to its music at listeners has amplified. This year J.J.Cale has written down the new disk Roll On which, undoubtedly, will involve even more attention in its creativity.

J.J.Cale continues cooperation with Eric Clapton

As one would expect, the part of songs for album Roll On of Cale was written down in Tulse, by the State of Oklahoma, at studio North Dejvida Tigardena. Teagarden has divided party shock on this work with Jim Keltnerom. On this plate the actor remains is true as the habits, and the crowned to style. And as the first proof it is served header by a disk track – Roll On, which Cale has written down with the old friend and colleague Eric Clapton. It is a remembered pop melody in the spirit of ruts-fate. The disk is opened by jazz melody Who Knew, and it is followed by introspective and philosophical composition Former Me. On such tracks as Where The Sun Don’t Shine and Fonda-Lina, J.J. affords small musical experiments, however, remaining true style. On gloomy Where The Sun Don’t Shine you will hear unusual keyboard, and song Fonda-Lina bears in itself a shade of the Spanish music. One of the most remembered tracks on an album can name safely blues Down To Memphis, and impressing motive Strange Days will please with a mix of acoustics and boogs – but there is more to come surprises from Dzhej-Dzheja Kejla as in this track are used both a mandoline. The immemorial and favourite theme of road is accurately designated by the actor in the name of song Leaving In The Morning, and in melody Oh Mary it has enclosed simply improbable quantity of the energy. The same tracks as Old Friend and final Bring Down The Curtain, are devoted such themes, as losses and transience of a human life.

Roll On – vintage music of our days

It is necessary to underline once again that during all long career of J.J.Cale did not change style. At the expense of it it was recognised in any period of the creative activity. And to what experiments and throwings if the executor has found itself in the world of modern music and are created by what is pleasant also to him, and listeners? And though some actors who arrived in a similar way, it is possible to name hostages of a genre, to Kejlu such expression is inapplicable. He knows how to create beautiful and минималистичную a pop rock music, and большего it and would not like. Thus he is able not to repeat, creating masterpieces on the favourite themes. Songs with Roll On sound so as if they have been written down in the last century, nevertheless, it is modern music. And in it there is nothing surprising, after all last year Cale was executed – neither much, nor it is not enough – seventy years. And it has spent the basic part of these years at concerts, to studios and on the journey between cities during tour. Of course, the actor has seen much and has worried, and consequently its thoughtful plate Roll On seems such unusual, standing independently among other releases. Nevertheless, in songs of the musician there is no weariness – its voice is still strong, and melodies created by Cale’s impress. And it is possible to name complete, philosophical disk Roll On undoubtedly the most skilful work from everything, to it created.
